Fair Shares has signed up with the familiar sounding but differently spelt charity Fare Share, whose aims are to tackle food waste and fight hunger. Through the Fare Share scheme, the lunch club which runs once a week at the Chequers Bridge Centre, is now receiving food from the local Tesco’s supermarket that would previously have been thrown away. Rob, our volunteer chef for the Lunch Club, uses the food from Tesco to create a healthy lunch for the 20-30 people who attend. Participants help with the catering and learn how to cook healthy meals as well as taking on the ever necessary task of washing up. In season, produce from our allotment is also used to expand the food available to the group.
The lunch club is a great gateway project into wider involvement with Fair Shares and many people who currently attend are also involved in our other projects or one to one time banking exchanges. It is also a positive social occasion where people come to chat and spend time with others on an informal basis.
